Weight Management

Many people struggle with weight control.  Our focus is on enjoyable, healthy eating, that you can really live with. Anyone can lose weight by using a program based on prepackaged food, but most people regain the lost weight soon after. Our programs are based on an understanding of how the body really works. We focus on helping you understand your hunger, kicking up your metabolism via exercise, choosing satisfying meals, and avoiding emotional eating. Our goals is to help you improve your health, body-image, and sense of well being. We now offer low carb plans as well as traditional weight loss programs. Our low carb plans are based on solid research, published in peer-reviewed journals.

Medical Nutrition Therapy

Many medical conditions require changes in your diet.  We can help you understand the diet and how to live with it, and help you reduce medical complications.

bulletControl of cholesterol or triglycerides: Learn that you can eat more than "the same old chicken" while lowering cholesterol. Learn about foods that help to lower cholesterol, and lower your risk of heart disease. Learn why beef can be a part of a healthy diet. Learn which fats will help to protect your heart.
bulletHypertension: The National Institutes of Health (NIH) are recommending a diet that can help reduce your blood pressure with or without medication. The DASH (Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension) diet has been proven effective in multi-center trials sponsored by the NIH.
bulletDiabetes: Type 2 diabetes management is a specialty of our office. Learn about the diet and exercise changes you can make to reduce your dependence on medication.
bulletMetabolic syndrome: Metabolic syndrome is a combination of abdominal obesity, elevated triglycerides, low HDL cholesterol, and/or high blood pressure. It is associated with increased risks for developing cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. It can be reversed through diet and other lifestyle changes, and is another specialty of our office.

bulletCulinary instruction - Whether you don't have a clue what a stove is used for, or you make fabulous gourmet meals, we can help you. Our focus is on healthy quick meals. If you are comfortable with more elaborate menus, we can help you make adjustments in menus or recipes to make them less calorie-laden and less artery-clogging, while still keeping all the flavor. Marla spent 2 years as the nutrition instructor at the Cooking and Hospitality Institute of Chicago, and has supervised or revised hundreds of student menu projects. She also taught introductory foods at UIC (and previously at Dominican University), teaching future dietitians about great, healthy food.
